Not just any other week in Colombia!!

Lunch with a member
First off, Sorry that I am writing so early in your time, but that was not necessarily my choice.
I hope that everything went well for you guys this week. You don`t have to worry about not writing me this week.  I`m writing earlier because of some unplanned events that have occurred in Barranquilla this last weekend.  Don`t worry too much about this email because I`m fine and all of the other missionaries in the coast are fine, but there have been some bomb attacks in the city of Barranquilla so we have been in our houses for 2 days.
They didn`t even let us go to church yesterday because of the unknown danger that could still be passing right now.  But like I said we`re all good especially here in my area.  Because Baranoa to Barranquilla is like Riverton to Salt Lake.  So if bombs were going off in Salt Lake that would be scary, but still a considerable distance from home.  But the scary thing for me is that the first bomb went off in my first area.  It happened a little more on the sketchy side of that area and thank goodness not to many people were wounded.

We`re going to be inside the rest of the day today and we don`t know about tomorrow or anything.  Depends if anything else happens.

Me burning my companions Dear John letter

As for my week it was interesting.  It wasn`t like any other week.  My companion was having a hard time this week because like I mentioned before he got a dear John a few weeks back. (It`s ironic because his name is John) This week his ex-girlfriend got married so I wasn`t really in the mood to work much.  So I had to drag him a long a little more this week, but like they say in Spanish here, "a veces nos toca."  (That`s like saying it`s my turn or You`ve gotta do what you`ve gotta do) The day that his girlfriend got married I grabbed his dear john (which he has printed) and I just looked at him and set it on fire.  I told him he could thank me later.  I was surprised that he laughed at that.  I think it helped him out a little.

Also the other day we were in a motocarro and there was another girl sitting next to my companion in the motocarro and he was trying to start a conversation with her being polite, but she didn`t seem like she wanted to talk much.  Then she said something to the mototaxista in a different accent and my companion and I looked at each other and I asked her in Spanish where she was from and she said she was from the U.S.  I smiled and asked her from what part in English and that surprised her a ton.  She said she was from Boston and we talked for a second.  She said she was working with the Peace Corp and the government and I said that`s cool because I have been thinking about joining the Navy when I get back and she was super surprised.  And asked me, "you`re from the U.S.?" I just thought that was a super funny moment.  That I am starting to look and sound like a Colombian that even when I talk English to someone they still don`t believe I from the U.S. (She wasn`t interested in our message, but it was still cool to talk in English with someone)

Keeping the fire alarm from going off after burning the Dear John

WE HAVE ANOTHER BAPTISM THIS WEEK.

Amalia Rodriguez, she`s awesome she`s a middle aged woman that has a sister who`s a member and visits from the U.S. sometimes.  Her sister was a missionary and taught her a lot already so we just finished the job basically.  She`s super sweet hearted and is super nice to the missionaries..  She`s almost finished the Book of Mormon and she was keeping the word of wisdom before we taught her.

We are also teaching a young man named Bryan that is 24 years old and he doesn`t believe in God.  But he wants to improve his life. He has had tons of problems in his past with drugs and alcohol and he believes that we can offer some help.  He has really struggled with prayer.  He still doesn`t feel like someone is there, but he`s really trying and he`s reading the Book of Mormon.  In fact I don`t know where he got it but he was reading in Doctrine in Covenants.  He was reading about the seven seals so we`ve gotta help him out with that too.  The other day we taught him about fasting.  He said we`re crazy he couldn`t do a fast even if he wanted too.  We told him it could help him know if God exists and receive help to withstand temptation.  He called us two days ago to ask us if we could do a fast with him.  It`s amazing to watch how the spirit is guiding him little by little to know these things are true.  He has a baptismal date for the 24th of February.  But that depends on his problems with drugs and alcohol.

Also my companion has a little book that`s called the missionary`s little book of inspirational stories or something like that.  I think Janaye has this book.  I read a quote that I really enjoyed I thought you also might enjoy it.

"Every person who has become successful has formed the habit of doing things failures dislike doing and will not do... Fear is a habit; So are self-pity, defeat, anxiety, despair, hopelessness, and resignation.  You can eliminate all of these habits with two simple resolves: "I can!" and "I will!"
-Paul J Meyer

And yes I do still like good quotes

I pray you are all well and you have success in your work and studies and hearts open to the spirit.  He guides much better than we can.
